A planning study of a Neighborhood Model (Al-Jameaa District) in Jeddah

"The Neighborhood Model" is an ambitious and noteworthy initiative launched by King Abdulaziz University in 2018, with the objective of transforming the Al-Jameaa District in Jeddah into an exemplary neighborhood. The initiative aimed to implement various development, awareness, educational, and health programs in collaboration with relevant sectors. The Faculty of Architecture and Planning at King Abdulaziz University, specifically the Department of Urban and Regional Planning, successfully accomplished this objective by assembling a dedicated team of ten students supervised by faculty members. The team's mission was to conduct comprehensive planning studies and propose suitable development plans for the neighborhood. However, a major challenge faced by the team was the lack of available data on the study area, necessitating extensive urban, traffic, and visual surveys to understand the area's urban characteristics. Subsequently, the team analyzed various aspects, including land uses, building conditions and heights, construction materials, road network conditions, traffic densities, distribution of public services, and open spaces. The study concluded by identifying both obstacles and potential opportunities for area development, resulting in the formulation of several design alternatives as part of a comprehensive development plan for the neighborhood.

It is noteworthy to highlight that the collaborative efforts of the project team and the supervising staff of the Model Neighborhood Initiative were recognized and honored by His Excellency, the President of the University.
